My first exposure to the internet was at the Pentagon in 1984.
I took a course on computer networking fundamentals covering layered protocols. Two students in the class were from the Army and were
given authorization to take the class into the Pentagon basement. They
showed us a couple of servers and thick coaxial cables. It was pretty boring, but because the Cold War was still on, it was a thrill being at ground zero.
They told us the
Defense Department recently made a decision to standardize on a
networking protocol called TCP/IP. This protocol IS the basis of all
internet connectivity. Fast forward to 1993 - Two things happened; 1) the Federal Government released the use of the network to the private sector and 2) one application was created: Mosaic (the first world wide web browser). The internet exploded.
Around this time, my hands on Hosting Skills grew at Corporate Information Systems then at Iserv. There were no home routers, WiFi, simple website tools, it all had to be created from scratch. I was there doing it with the help of some big brained people.
Today it is easy to get connected, email, a domain name and your
own website. It wasn't always - but thank the Lord for Geeks and
Marketeers. Together they continually make useful and friendly tools everybody can use.
My understanding of the internet fundamentals has helped me provide
more reliable services. Knowing these fundamentals is especially
important during design and requirements analysis. Each design
decision must balance client needs with scalability and performance.
Every easy and simple decision affects small and large websites. The
right choice of methods and internet services is absolutely critical
for large high traffic sites.
